Niños De La Tierra was a long term collaboration between myself and brand cofounder Nancy Portillo. We each introduced elements of our communal cultural cannon and extrapolated that into a capsule collection of shirt designs.
The aim was to respond to local and national brands who have incorporated Mexican and Chicano themes into their products, but from our view often miss the mark on representation of those grew up in borderlands.
Design choices were made in response to the visual language of the borderlands that we have grown up in. We took inspiration from depictions of santos, hand painted signs on businesses, and both old forms of border fashion and current styles.
